The Grandmaster
Sees What Others
Cannot Read.

Chess research proved it: grandmasters don't think harder than their opponents. They recognise patterns others cannot yet see — because they have seen this position 100,000 times before.

57,200 coaching hours builds the same thing. For business owners ready to invest in coaching that actually moves something — the move that unlocks the next decade of your business arrives before you have consciously formed it. That is not intuition. That is pattern recognition at depth.

THE RESEARCH

Why 57,200 Hours Isn't What You Think It Is

De Groot's foundational chess research showed that grandmasters and novices look at the same board. The difference is not intelligence. Not analytical depth. It is the library of patterns the grandmaster brings to what they see.

A grandmaster stores approximately 100,000 positions in long-term memory. When they glance at the board, pattern recognition fires before conscious thought. They see 10 moves ahead — not by calculating, but by recognising. The position is familiar. The outcome is already known.

"I fear not the man who has practised 10,000 kicks once — but the man who has practised one kick 10,000 times."

— Bruce Lee
~100,000
Patterns stored in a grandmaster's long-term memory

A typical chess master stores ~10,000 positions. A grandmaster stores 10× that. 57,200 coaching hours builds the equivalent — in human behaviour, leadership, and performance.

10–15 moves
Ahead a grandmaster calculates — not by thinking more, but by recognising faster

Research shows grandmasters calculate the same number of variations as masters — just the right ones. Pattern recognition replaces exhaustive calculation. This is what coaching mastery feels like.

2 seconds
To reconstruct a grandmaster-level chess position from memory (De Groot, 1946)

Novices reconstructed 25% of pieces correctly. Grandmasters reconstructed almost all of them — not because they had better memory, but because they saw patterns, not pieces.

Business Coaching

Coaching coaches, executives, and founders across every format and every level. The patterns of high performance — and high-performance failure — become unmistakable after this many conversations.

"The patterns that show up in every high-performer. When to coach and when to step back. How to see 10 moves ahead in a single conversation."

THE STORY

I started coaching at 20 years old on a sports field. I had no idea what I was doing — just energy, instinct, and a genuine obsession with what makes people perform.

For the next 20 years I coached athletes. Beginners who could barely move and experts competing at the highest levels. 45,000 hours of watching human beings push against their limits.

Then I became an owner. A founder. A CEO. For 15 years I sat in the chair — making the calls, building the teams, carrying the culture. 7,200 hours of understanding what it actually means to lead.

And then I combined it all. Working with coaches, executives, and founders — helping them find what I found in all those hours: that the difference between good and exceptional is almost never about skill. It is about pattern recognition. Seeing what others cannot yet see. Being 10 moves ahead.

57,200 hours later, this is what I bring to every conversation.

THE FLAGSHIP FRAMEWORK

Ten Moves Ahead

The coaching conversation as a chess game — and why the master coach already knows how it ends

01
Move 1: The surface position

What the client says. What the novice coach hears. What the master coach immediately reads beneath it.

02
Move 2: Pattern recognition

"I have seen this before." The master coach already knows the shape of this challenge across 10,000 variations.

03
Move 3: The question beneath

What is the client not saying? The hesitation. The word chosen over the one avoided.

04
Move 4: Anticipating resistance

Where will they push back? What belief is protecting the status quo? The pawn chain, seen before it forms.

05
Move 5: The emotional fork

Two paths open. One comfortable, one necessary. The master coach sees both before the client can feel them.

06
Move 6: The system view

Who else is on the board? Team, partner, board, investor. The master coach sees the whole game, not just this square.

07
Move 7: The pivot point

One moment where the session goes deep or stays shallow. Seen three moves before it arrives. Prepared.

08
Move 8: Navigating the corner

The client hits their edge and deflects. Expected. The question already formed that neither shames nor releases.

09
Move 9: The endgame insight

Not the insight they were looking for. The one they needed. Seen at move 2. Offered at move 9.

10
Move 10: The move that lasts

A commitment that holds in three months. The master coach knows which ones do.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Everything You Need to Know

Business owners, founders, and executives who are ready to invest in coaching at depth. People who have already built something, who know the work is now on them, and who want a coach with the hours to actually see what is happening.

It means that in a coaching conversation, the master coach sees patterns the client cannot yet read. The resistance that will come at move 4. The real question beneath the stated one. The insight that needs to arrive at move 9. This is what 57,200 hours builds — not intuition. Pattern recognition.

Private, one-to-one coaching. Engagements typically run six to twelve months, with weekly or fortnightly sessions plus access between. Every engagement starts with a Discovery Call and a written proposal — never a generic package.

Engagements are priced on scope and time horizon, not on hours. We discuss investment openly on the Discovery Call once we both know whether the fit is right. This is a serious commitment — and it pays for itself in the first quarter for almost every client.

57,200 hours of real coaching across sport, business, and leadership. A pattern library built over 30 years — and the lived experience of running businesses, leading teams, and carrying the weight of being the person at the top. Most coaches have read about this. I have done it.

Thirty minutes. No pitch. We talk about where your business actually is, what is keeping you up at night, and whether this is the right fit. If it is not, I will tell you. If it is, we move to a written proposal.

Online for clients anywhere in the world. In person in Australia for clients within reach. The medium does not matter — presence does.

Once we have agreed scope, usually within two weeks. I deliberately keep the client list small. If there is no immediate space, you go on a short waitlist.
